2 short N-numbers open at the FAA right now
A short N-number, like N7K or N42, is the aviation version of a single-letter license plate. The format allows only 8,559 of them with three characters or fewer, and nearly all are held. When one comes open it is usually gone within days, so the list below changes often.
Every number above came back available from the FAA's own search in the latest nightly sweep. Want one that's taken? Look it up and we can approach the owner.
How many short N-numbers are there?
8,559 valid combinations have three characters or fewer after the N: 9 one-character numbers, 306 two-character numbers, and 8,244 three-character numbers. Almost all of them are assigned to aircraft or reserved.
How much does a short N-number cost?
If a short number is open at the FAA, reserving it costs the FAA's $10 fee. Once someone holds it, three-character numbers typically trade for $1,000 to $10,000, and two-character numbers for five figures when they trade at all.
Why are only a few short numbers listed?
Because only a few are open on any given night. Everything on this page came back available from the FAA's own search in the latest sweep. A number held by someone else won't appear here, but its expiration date is public and it can be watched.
